How can parents become better communication and play partners?
It is hard for parents to know where to start when their child gets a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. What should a parent do first, second, third?
I can't answer that for all aspects of raising a child with ASD. But to help you decide how to start with teaching your child to play and communicate, I suggest that you read How to Change the Way You Talk first and then Predictability I, followed by A Good Communication Game. A discussion on how to start with a child who is very self-directed and not easily engaged in social interaction can be found on my blog, Creating Common Ground.
If your child is not yet verbal, read Talking Buttons and seriously consider buying four buttons since these will make teaching many of the new games suggested here easier.
From there, these Tip Pages can be read in any order. Feel free to send me suggestions for more Tip Page topics.
